About the Maestros
Tango Unlimited is run by professional Argentinean Tango dancers and teachers Guillermo Torrens and Maria Maragaki. Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, they promote authentic Argentinean Tango in the UK but also abroad. Maria and Guillermo work with individuals and groups of all levels.
Tango is a way of expressing feelings, depicting life experiences and interpreting stories. The main characteristic of the Tango Unlimited teaching method is to combine the best dance techniques with personal expression. By balancing demanding techniques with the fun and simplicity of dancing socially, Maria and Guillermo encourage their students to enjoy dancing Tango without getting hung up on counting steps.
The social side of this dance culture is an important part of the fun/learning experience. Their students are invited to Milongas, special Tango social events where they can meet up with friends and make new ones, all united in their love of Tango.
Maria and Guillermo won two LUKAS awards both years 2011 and 2012 in the categories: "Tango Performers Of The Year" and "Tango Teachers Of The Year" (2011) and "Tango Performers Of The Year" and "Tango Teachers Of The Year" (2012).
Guillermo Torrens was born in Argentina and Tango soon became his life. He watched it performed in houses, theatres, at Milongas and in the streets and longed to Tango professionally himself. His studies began in Rosario, Argentina with the legendary Orlando Paiva along with Claudio Omar and Maria Veronica and intensified when he moved to Buenos Aires in 2002 to study with teachers such as the “Maestro de Maestros” Raul Bravo along with Angela Ruth Manonellas, Silvio Lavia and Mimi Santapa. While he was living in Rosario his education in the arts covered more areas apart from dance and was enriched with studies in acting with Hector Ansaldi. Studying classical dance at an early age influenced Guillermo. His artistic background has a strong emphasis on technique and dance interpretation. He studied ballet at Teatro Colon with Liliana Belfiore, a former Prima Ballerina of the English National Ballet Company. Even now he continues to learn from other excellent teachers. Guillermo has performed in many shows and theatres in Argentina such as Teatro el Circulo (Rosario), Teatro fundación Astengo (Rosario), Teatro La Cooperacion (Rosario), Teatro Colon (Bs. As.), Teatro Nacional Cervantes (Bs. As.),Teatro Avenida (Bs As), Centro Cultural Borges (Bs.As.), Teatro El Globo (Bs. As.), Teatro El Cubo (Bs. As.) as well as at Casas de Tango such as Confiteria Ideal, Cafe Tortoni, Esquina Homero Manzi. He has been also member of the Ballet de Tango Pichincha, Ballet de Atilio Sanchez, Cuballet Rosario, Koi Ballet, Compania de Liliana Belfiore, Ballet Neoclasico de Bs. As., Compania Ballet con Humor. From 2005 until 2007 he was the tango partner of Liliana Belfiore and together they participated in different shows and events and were invited to appear in TV shows. Guillermo has also performed outside of Argentina in many countries such as Brazil and in Europe. In 2007 he toured around the UK as the lead dancer in Tango Nuevo with the Tango Siempre Company. In 2011 Guillero performed with his partner Maria at the Midnight Tango show tour in UK and he continued with the Midnight Tango show at West End theatres in London and the national (UK) tours in 2012 and 2013. Guillermo's latest performing work includes his appearance on the iTV live show "This Morning" and the "Classic Brits Awards 2012" at the Royal Albert Hall dancing the music of Miloš Karadagli?. He also appears at the DVD of the "Midnight Tango" show which was released in 2011. Latest projects include dance performances for the the national tour of internationally known tango singer Martin Alvarado. Guillermo is an experienced choreographer. He has choreographed many of the shows and exhibitions with which he’s been involved. He has taught in Argentina, Switzerland and the UK, including tuition for the Northern Tango Society. At present he teaches with Maria for their own tango school Tangounlimited and they are also involved with teaching tango in schools.
Maria Maragaki has had a passion for the performing arts since early childhood. She was born and raised in Greece in an artistic environment where she was lucky enough to be surrounded by a variety of multicultural influences. Her dancing CAREER STARTED in 1981 when she focused on classical dance at Morianov Ballet School in Greece and is being continued with on-going training until present. This has served as the benchmark for a lifelong training in dance. Maria has studied a range of other subjects apart from dance and music including Economic Science and Arts & Cultural Management for which she received a BA degree from the University of Piraeus in Greece and a MA degree from Northumbria University in UK accordingly. However, her passion and dedication to dance led her to the career choice of a dancer. Although her roots were in studying dances from the Greek tradition she was inspired to widen her horizons towards Spain and Argentina. Falling in love with the music and dance of Flamenco, she began advanced training in Europe. This journey in ethnic music and dance led her to discover the culture of Argentina where the passion and magic of the Tango captured her soul. Since then she has undergone training by well-known dancers and teachers in Europe and Argentina such as Raul Bravo, Angela Ruth Manonellas and Andreas Erbsen, Andres “Tanguito” Cejas and Genoveva Fernandez. Other important maestros include Mimi Santapa, Stella Barba, Natacha Poberaj. Maria has also studied music intensively, specialising in classical form. In 1998 she graduated from The National Conservatory in Greece with Distinction In Piano Performance. Her interest in music extends to studying traditional/folk music in order to understand the form and structure of the different dances associated with it. Maria’s extensive teaching experience includes teaching Argentine Tango to adults as well as piano and music to young people. With Guillermo they give workshops of Argentine Tango also in schools. She also takes Flamenco and Greek dancing classes mainly in primary schools for the Newcastle Music Service but also runs workshops in secondary and high schools. Maria’s considerable dance performance career started in ballet. Traditional Greek dancing tours followed. She has performed in theatres and collaborated with festivals and tours. For many years she danced flamenco at festivals and various British art venues mostly with the band “Electroflamenko”. Since 2009 she has been performing Argentine Tango with Guillermo Torrens in various art venues and festivals and their repertoire includes tango salon (improvisation) and scenario (choreography). Maria did the UK tour of "Midnight Tango" show in 2011 and she also appears at the DVD of the "Midnight Tango" show which was released in 2011. Latest projects include dance performances for the national tour of internationally known tango singer Martin Alvarado. Maria continues performing with Guillermo. numerous festivals and events
